Why cardiology needs a cardiology EHR

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of death, accounting for 32% of global deaths in 2022 (World Health Organization, 2023). That burden lands on cardiology practices as volume, complexity and time pressure at once, and it is the reason a general-purpose chart tends to strain here before it strains anywhere else.

The five pressures on a cardiology practice

  • Data volume and complexity. Cardiac patients generate ECGs, echocardiograms, imaging and serial labs. Scattered across systems, the detail that matters is the detail that gets missed.

What the evidence says about outcomes

The case is not only about convenience. A retrospective analysis of more than 45,000 patients hospitalised for cardiovascular disease found that those treated in facilities using fully electronic records had 17 to 30 percent lower odds of an in-hospital adverse event than those in hospitals with partial or no EHR (Furukawa et al., 2020). A separate analysis of cardiovascular and surgical patients associated a fully implemented EHR with a 31 percent lower risk of post-procedural events and 21 percent fewer general adverse events (Syrop, 2016).

Cardiology EHR or cardiology EMR, and what actually differs

The two terms are used interchangeably in practice, and a cardiology EMR system and a cardiology EHR system describe the same thing for most buyers. What matters is not the acronym but whether the record was designed around cardiac care. A general-purpose system will store an echocardiogram report; a system built for cardiologists puts it next to the prior study, the current medications and the last ejection fraction, so the comparison a cardiologist actually makes takes one screen instead of four.

Billing and cardiology informatics
